Find two things to compliment for every critique / two nice things to say for every mean thing.
That's a pretty good rule.

I try to give supportive comments when I can. If I feel I have advice or a suggestion to offer, I do so politely. My personal rule is that unless I know I can do much better, I have no right to complain about anything.

Obviously, that means I never have to complain.

This poll really sucks! ;) Just kidding! I notice people getting really upset by thoughtless comments every once in a while. I think it's a mistake to take many of these comments seriously simply because so many people on this planet are clueless wonders. Some people get 99% positive feedback but pay more attention to the one guy who's clearly got a stick up his ass. It's important to be realistic and be able to take criticism from jerks and experts, alike. Mostly, though, people are extremely supportive on Deviantart. Thanks everybody! This site STILL ROCKS! :)

No, never, hardly ever any criticism, even constructive XD when someone gave me a save or a comment I try to give one back and if all they have are drawings of dogs in their math notebook I'll just day something like 'nice dog'. XD silly and a lie but for that person it means a lot and can push them to improve and not leave this site

i prefer being positive, but when i see something to point out, i do. i try to be as respectful as possible, though. i know how mad i am at myself when i messed up something simple, and just didnt see it because i grew too used to what it looked like. being aloof and teacher-like doesnt help a bit. im more like "hey, this looks a bit off to my eyes" instead of "lolol your anatomy sux!" or even "well, you definitely need to work on your anatomy, bub."

after all, there can be thousands of reasons behind bending or breaking a rule - so feedback as to whether something sticks out or draws attention to it can be helpful to gauge whether one got away with the rulebending.

after all, i see us here more like artists showing fellow artists their current stuff, not showing artworks to an audience, exhibition-like. to me, dA is definitely a shop talk environment. :)

rude or disrespectful comments, just to make someone feel bad are off the mark in any situation.

Some of my constructive crits have been construed as being "negative" but not very often and it's usually when the artist has an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore. lol I do give crits when they are not asked for but it's usually only when I see something massively wrong with a piece and everyone else is just handing out asspats and ignoring the issues in the art.
I didn't leave a crit on your shark hunter girl because everyone else had already pointed out what was off with her anatomy (though I got that the missing nose was part of the style and tribute to fftactics). There was no reason to just further compound what you'd already had pointed out for you.
Other than the anatomy flaws, I saw enough in the picture that I liked to still add it to my favs.

But no, I don't try to be negative in my comments, and never abusive.

For now, I never left a negative comment on someone's work. I don't see the point to commenting on something I dislike, I just click it away.

I don't mind to leave a critique as for improvement, but that depends on the artist that wants It or not.

I assume this poll is the result of the comments you received on your newest picture? (if it's still the newest)
I usually don't leave negative comments. I leave concrit but I always make sure to add some positive feedback between all the concrit, as to not make the artist in question feel as if they just drew a bunch of crap with nothing good in it at all.

Now, you shouldn't take your recent comments as a bad thing, even though they probably were pretty harsh. The reason why you received them is that you're so talented and your pictures are pretty much perfect, so the recent one just surprised some of us a bit.
With great power comes great responsibility XD?

But srsly, I'm sorry if what I said upset you in any way. I assure you I didn't intend to. I was just surprised because you're one of the artists I draw inspiration from.

This is what I like on DA! Most users know how hard it is to get better. Whether it is drawing, painting, photography, ... , whatever! There is a certain respect even for "bad" (or better "not yet good") stuff. You do not get this kind of environment on Youtube etc... So thank you guys out there very much for creating a place where everyone can grow! Love you all!

I'm not sure what you mean by a negative comment. I would never leave a comment just to antagonize someone ("your work sucks" or "this is just awful"). If I think a piece of art is terrible I simply move on. Constructive criticism may seem negative, especially if it's done crudely. But if the intent is to point out areas of improvement, I would not consider it a negative comment.

Based on the assumption that "negative comment" means a comment that disparages a work or a person, no one should ever post a negative comment on dA. There simply is no place for that here, IMO. This is where you come to discuss works and help others improve, not to make personal comments or try to insult people, whether directly or through their works.

I don't make negative comments. Frankly, I don't quite see the point in it. Some would excuse negative comments as being/offering "constructive criticism", but the simple fact is you don't know the artist in question. Perhaps they are full of doubt about their work. Perhaps they are merely sensitive. Regardless, offering praise or nothing at all is the most mutually beneficial direction someone can take.

When it comes to Deviations it really does go back to the old adage of "If you don't have something nice to say..." It might seem cliche, even myopic, to some. But the simple fact is you have to take others into consideration. What might not offend you could offend someone else.

Now, if someone is making some kind of "statement" designed to insight strong emotions (i.e. religious or political depictions) then they should, in all fairness, be willing to accept positive or negative responses.

I will occasionally leave a bit of criticism if they've requested it, but I keep it constructive: preface it with something I liked, then point out what could be improved and a potential way to improve it.

Нет, то что я сказала это почти прямой перевод "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all".

It is hard to not make a comment sometimes but then you must remember that you were young once and wanting attention. I have been an instructor and even in a classroom setting you need to be careful. I think the saying that you are your on worst enemy comes in to play and an artist must always look at other art and messure themself aginst that. After all it is all about hand and eye relationship and training the eye is just as important as training the hand.
