Suppose you're an artist... or some craftsman. You can do stuff. And you're pretty confident with your skills. You have people to prove it. You have clients. You can paid your bills and make a decent living. You've fancy things around you... the list goes on.

Now, imagine you see the work that's better than yours... x10 better, x100 better, infinity times better. What do you feel?

Anxiety, jealousy, depression? ...or maybe inspiration, respect and enlightenment?

The recent one for me was a cold shower feel. Everyone is better. F*ck! Even the monkey can draw better stuff!

It's a hard pill to swallow really. Your confidence is shattered. You don't feel the same anymore. Surprisingly enough after a few days you're back on track. Let's kick some ass, yeah!

I have been through this cycle many times. The details and feelings may vary but you've ups and downs like sine wave. The trick is to get out of 'downs' as soon as possible. Don't let them persuade you. Climb up.

I think most of us have been there >3<;;; Something I remember from the anime series Samurai Champloo, is where Jin, later on in the series to a teenager, says something along the lines of there's always someone better out there. Personally that made me realize that it might very well, for the most part, be a waste of breath trying to be the absolute best at something, so you might as well just invest as much time in yourself as you can, and live up to your own potential.

However I think I can safely say that artistic ability like yours is something that most artists strive for :la: You already rock really hard, so at least you have all that skill and ability in the bank already, so to speak C:

Thank you for your words!

I think such state grounds up your ego so it won't expand in the wrong way.

And thankfully most of us just recover from that state as time goes by.

Well, I got married to Pinka and I have to say that sometimes I get stressed with myself with her drawing by my side, than I start to draw and everything become shit...... Is a pretty lame thought, but happens. You start to count everytime that you not draw, the level that you probably would be and bla bla bla.

I can say that is a kind of jaelous..... but not always happens. Like when I see the Pacal Campion stuffs..... is incredible how I feel it breath emotions that just motivates me to keep doing to bring to people the same feeling that I feel looks at his drws.

One thing I've learned is that you can't live life constantly comparing yourself to others. Not just your art, anything. Just do your thing.

Also, "better" is really in the eye of the beholder, unless you mean on a purely technical level. :)

I understand what you guys mean, but don't forget that we live in the society and pick up a lot of things even subconsciously.
It's great if you can get rid of these things that bogging you down.

And sorry for changing topic but did you had an account on Elfwood.com somewhere in 1999-2000?

you're my favorite artist on DA.  I dont think anyone tops your combined powers of technique, creativity, and composition.  But i guess since you have the attitude of yearning to be better, you are constantly improving.

in general, i am not a jealous person.  I think everyone has their contributions to share, especially in something as subjective as art.  I think that, no matter what, one should be proud of their personal style, because that is something unique.

Awesome question! I wish I had more time to answer in full detail. All I know is that no matter what you do there will always be someone better at it than you. Always. Unless you are the world's best. And to be the best at any one thing requires a madness that isn't attainable just by trying hard. It's an obsession and it consumes you. You have to become what you're doing through and through or you will not be the best there ever was.
So unless you're willing to give every once of every fibre of your entire existence toward art then there will always be someone better!

BUT, you, you are magnificent. And your work is amazing. And because of the very nature of art, you may very well be the best and better than those you think are better than you. Because art is a matter of taste and often opinion. Art is forever changing. It flows and you flow with it, and that's what makes you great. Keep up the fantastic work :)

"I have been through this cycle many times. The trick is to get out of 'downs' as soon as possible. "

For me it REALLY bothers me more when i see an incredible artist a million times better than me but either not promoting themselves/believing in themselves enough OR being ignored for some some insane reason. It makes me feel bad because I want to help everyone but can't :/

I never get jealous of other artists, I always admire and cherish them :) I think because there aren't enough creative people in the world, we should all be on the same side and support eachother.

We all improve continually and there is no "perfection". Even the old masters, like Caravaggio, struggled ALL LIFE to get the "perfect" painting, without achieving it, because....life is movement, also change, and when you look at other artists you see new things, styles, things... that's awesome and it's what makes art so interesting.
There is no "definitive skill", also, think about how much artists moved, in later stages of their lifes, from a "perfect realism" to a more personal and expressive style: that's why there is no "definitive skill" or style, things always change to keep interesting for you and the world as a whole.

I always feel inspired and motivated by "better" artists than myself. I'm already at a point in my professional life were I know I'm skilled and my clients like my work, but I also know I still have LOT to learn and improve, and that motivates me to do more, study and dedicate myself to the work with more energy!

btw, your style is interesting, your pieces are professional-looking and some are really beautiful for me (else you won't be in my watchlist, except for some young artists friends, I try to keep in my watch only the artists that inspire and amaze me!).

Thanks Kalen! Actually I do enjoy seeing other people progress. Especially the people I knew (in some way or another). It's inspiring. I remember I once saw a picture of yours that blew my mind. And my first thought was 'oh man, that's fantastic!' and the second one 'I've gotta show it to others'. In this case I know that you're a hard working guy and everything you've accomplished is well deserved. Basically it's impossible to feel any negativity towards your progress.

In my case when I see a ton of cool artwork sometimes something clicks in my mind - dude, you're doing it wrong. Look at these guys and look at your stuff. It's not a beginning of soap drama mind you, it more like you instantly realise that you did a wrong turn along the way. And even if the people around telling me to shut up, because I'm good or something - it doesn't quiet my soul. Only long hours and hard work could resolve this... until the next time.

You get the fuck over it and be grateful that you have accomplished that much.
There are much better artists that are unemployed or never gotten a professional job.

" you never feel secure. Your soul never rest."
I guess I'm more pragmatic, logical and unemotional,
Which is why I wouldn't dwell enough on a "cold shower feel. Everyone is better. F*ck! Even the monkey can draw better stuff!" feeling.

How old are you?
I'm old enough to know that if I was making a living doing what you're doing, that ENOUGH people think I'm talented enough to pay me that I may live.
But most of all, knowing that getting better is just a matter of investing the time to learn and practice.

"What I'm saying here is no matter how good you're or how much you've accomplished, you never feel secure. Your soul never rest"
"I have been through this cycle many times."
That's a very human emotion that many haven't overcome, and when they don't, they end up going through " this cycle many times."
Once you see it's a cycle, it's up to you to say "ok, I'll just keep practicing until I get where I want to be".
Problem is, we humans indulge in moods. Good moods or bad moods.
It's a lot more...efficient to just move on and focus on improving yourself instead of whining about it

-But you have an audience.
On top of whatever moods you may feel you have an audience here on DA that'll eat out of your hands whenever you post a journal.
That feeds whatever moods you want to feed.
Recognition.
Acknowledgement.
Affirmation.

I was like you.
Emotional.
Human.
But I've read a lot of books that emphasize and teach  to grow more analytical instead of emotional.

If you want a "just get shit done" attitude and focus on getting shit done, I recommend these books:
The art of happiness by the Dalai Lama
"The Way of Walking Alone by Miyamoto Musashi. (very short, can probably be found for free)
How to stop worrying and start living by Dale Carnegie.

But trust me, I understand if you'd rather stay where you are and keep getting emotional and transmitting your feelings to your audience.
I wish you the best in all your endeavors.
